What is the most important thing to keep in mind?
Sorry if it might sound boring, but PLEASE RTFM (read the f.. fine manual!)

The Digital Rebel/300D is *not* a point-and-shoot camera, even thought the price might suggest that it is.

Make sure you learn how the camera acts in different modes. There really is a lot of value in the manual, it's a well written, it's small and it's easy to understand.
