Why is the picture on the LCD screen soft?
If you zoom all the way in on reviewing pictures on the camera's LCD screen, you might notice that the picture is softer than it should be. After transfer to a computer, the pictures will be much sharper.

If you zoom in all the way to 10x, the camera will actually show more than a 100% zoom of the image - on my PC the 10x zoom on the LCD is roughly equivalent to a 300% zoom in Photoshop. This means that on 10x zoom the camera is actually interpolating the image up, which adds some softness. Together with the relatively low resolution of the LCD compared to your PC screen this is accountable for the softness.

There's also a suspicion that the camera might use a downsampled preview image which due to it's smaller size will speed up image review but will be reduced on detail and sharpness.
