Why are my flash pictures underexposed?
There are a couple of reasons this can be happening. For one thing, the built in flash is relatively weak and the kit lens is relatively slow. This means that at ISO 100 the range of the flash may be only 7-12 feet (depending on focal length) even wide open! Try bumping up the ISO setting.

Also, E-TTL metering used by the flash system is rather tricky. It is well beyond the scope of this FAQ. On top of that, Canon appears to have been conservative in the way they meter to avoid blowing out highlights.

Some people have taken to using the 10d remote version of Breezebrowser to up the FEC of the camera to counteract this. I'm not endorsing this - just reporting it.
