10/23/2003: Canon has released firmware version 1.1.1 for the 300D/Digital Rebel. The announced features include more reliable PTP mode communications via USB and more reliable interfacing with RemoteCapture.

The firmware can be downloaded at http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eosdigital/E3kr_firmware-e.html, and requires a 300D/Digital Rebel with Firmware 1.0.2 and a freshly formatted CF card to perform the upgrade.

There is underway several attempts to modify the firmware of the 300D with varying degrees of success. Canon has not officially stated a position on this, though I'm certain I know how they feel and therefore I will not provide more information here than saying such efforts exist. :)
