Picture editing in Linux
To edit the pictures you can either use the excellent command line package netpbm (http://netpbm.sourceforge.net/) which offers a wide array of editing and conversion features in a set of command line tools.
For graphic editing I would suggest getting GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) and to add the excellent Refocus plugin (http://refocus.sourceforge.net/). The 300D's pictures react excellently to either USM (unsharp mask) or refocus sharpening. I have found that the latter is easier to configure and allows for a bit more sharpening before artefacts begin to appear.
