Yes, a 55mm-55mm or 55mm-52mm adapter tube is required. Filters, hoods and additional lenses (converters) CANNOT be fitted to the camera without the extension tube. The lens on the S602Z is not threaded, but the barrel around the lens is. The adapter tube (available from Fuji or Kenko) is a tube that shrouds the lens and is threaded so you can put filters on the end of it. Many users recommend leaving the adapter tube with a UV or Skylight filter on it on the camera to protect the extending lens, which does seem quite delicate. Please note that if you get filters, you'll need a lens cap as well, as the Fuji supplied lens cap does not fit 52 or 55mm threads. Don't buy the 55-52mm tube unless you have to, for a specific converter or similar. With 55-52, when you use the single recommended UV filter AND a hood there IS vignetting on wide-angle, no problem on telephoto. A 55-52 is OK if you use a single filter or close-up lens and nothing else. It is best to use all 55mm. With a UV filter & the 2filters.com WIDE rubber hood there is NO vignetting. With the regular hood there is still slight vignetting. The 55mm filters & close-up lenses are all the same price so stick with 55-55. If you have a 52mm telephoto converter use the 55-55 tube and a 55-52 step-down ring and leave the step-down on the tele lens.
