It is illegal to transport mercury in any form on an aircraft. Mercury causes aluminum to rapidly corrode causing structural failures.
A British official was carrying a barometer on board a British Airways jet (was approved to do so) when it broke. The airline was informed of the accident after the jet landed. The airplane was scrapped.
